Designing A Patio

Decking

Although, garden decking is a relatively modern phonemen, the use of wood as an outdoor flooring has a long history if you consider such things as verandahs, railway platforms and piers. The use in the garden as am alternative to paving slabs has increased in recent years. Adding a deck will create an ideal space to enjoy good weather and create a focal point for your garden. It will also mean you can enjoy the outside whatever the conditions underfoot. The design of a decking is very important as the space can link the house to the garden and so can be an integral part of both. Alternatively you can have an island area of decking linked to the house by a walkway.

Decking is made from hardwood or treated softwood and built upon a wooden frame.

Decking can be constructed in many shapes and sizes and there are a few things to consider. Make sure the area you are going to cover is big enough for your furniture. If you haven't already bought your furniture then try some indoor furniture or measure out the equivalent area. The position is important too. You do not want the decking to be in shade or too near to large trees. Shade can be improvised from awnings or umbrellas. Shelter from wind is important, but not at the expense of sunlight. If you have to you can erect a pegola screen or plant some small trees or even a hedge. Also, make sure you do not build over any manhole covers.

Decking is relatively easy to build, but if you are not too confident then get professionals to do the job -- make sure you have some references.
